Are you considering law school?  The Law School Admission Council (LSAT) collects data on law school applicants and admissions.  An analysis of the 2020 data about IUPUI students provides some helpful guidance for those applying in the future.

Last year 87 IUPUI students applied to attend law school in the fall, 2020.  40 students were admitted to 1 or more law schools and began classes this fall for an admission rate of 46%.  This is below the national average of 60%.(LSAC Blog, https://www.lsac.org/blog/starting-law-school-amid-pandemic-incoming-class-2020).

55% of IUPUI students attended the IU McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis and 15% attended the IU Maurer School of Law in Bloomington.  The remaining students attended 11 other schools across the country.

37.5% of IUPUI students admitted to law school majored in Liberal Arts and 46% of those students majored in Political Science.  Other schools at IUPUI with notable numbers include:  22.5% from the Kelley School of Business, 17.5% from the School of Science and 12.5% from SPEA.

The average LSAT for admitted students from IUPUI was a 152 and the average GPA was 3.38.  No students were admitted to either of the IU law schools with an LSAT below 140 or a GPA below 3.0.

What does this data mean for current students?

  • Keep your GPA up and study for the LSAT.  The 50th percentile GPA for McKinney 3.49 and the 50th percentile LSAT was 154.  See full McKinney class statistics here. The 50th percentile GPA for Maurer was 3.78 and the LSAT was 162 .  See full Maurer class statistics here.
  • Apply before the March 1st priority deadline. Students who applied late were not admitted to either IU law school, even with an LSAT and GPA above the average.
  • Consider minoring in Legal Studies. Classes for the minor are taught by lawyers and introduce you to the types of reading, writing and thinking you will encounter in law school.  More information on the minor is available here.
