Professor Demirel-Pegg was invited to an online discussion on protests at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey. Students, lecturers, and faculty began demonstrating peacefully in early January 2021, following the appointment of Melih Bulu as the rector of the University. Melih Bulu, who was previously not a faculty member of Boğaziçi University, was brought to this position by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on January 2, 2021, via presidential decree because of his close ties with the president’s political party. After six months of continuous protests, Melih Bulu was removed from his position on July 15, again by a presidential decree. Professor Demirel-Pegg and Professor Deniz Erkmen, another political scientist from Özyeğin University in Istanbul, discussed the harsh police response to student protesters, the tactics and strategies both sides employed, and the potential for these protests to escalate to a widespread mass movement.
