When You Visit

Who’s Welcome to Visit the Speaker’s Lab

All IUPUI students, faculty and staff are welcome to visit the lab and utilize our resources. Although the lab is typically used to assist R110 students, we can always provide feedback for any presentations you may have to give in any other classes. We have individual rooms and a larger room for groups to ensure that we can meet your needs and assist you in delivering a wonderful presentation.

What to Bring

When visiting the Speaker’s Lab, please have your instructor’s name, section number and if you are not in an R110 class, your instructors email address. Any materials you may have, including your outline, note cards or PowerPoint, are also helpful when working to improve your presentation. It is also helpful for you to have any notes on the assignment or a copy of the assignment as some R110 professors have specific criteria. A writing utensil and paper are always a good idea as well.

What to Expect When You Visit

When you visit the Speaker’s Lab, it is best to call ahead and schedule an appointment. However, if you cannot do so, and we have mentors available, we will be happy to help walk-in visitors. A mentor will take you into one of our three private practice rooms and you will be free to express what you wish to work on during your visit. Typically, appointments last about a half an hour, but if you need longer we are happy to make accommodations.

Following Up After Your Visit

During your visit, the mentor you are working with will take down some of your information and a few notes on what you discussed during your time at the Lab. Following your visit, we will send both you and your professor an email noting when you were in the Lab, and what was accomplished during your visit. If for some reason your instructor does not receive the email stating that you were in the Lab, you should first email the Lab and in the subject line write: Missing Student Visit Report. Include in the email the name of the mentor you were working with, the day you came, the approximate time you visited, your instructor’s name and your section number. If you don’t get a response within 24 business hours, call or visit the Lab to inquire about your visit report.
