INDIANAPOLIS – Kim Dunlap and Alaa Abdeldaiem will represent the Sports Capital Journalism Program at IUPUI when they cover the National Football League Scouting Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Dunlap and Abdeldaiem will file reports as prospects are evaluated by NFL coaches and administrators. This is the third consecutive year and fourth overall that students from IUPUI have covered the event.
“The National Football League Scouting Combine has become one of the most challenging events a student sports journalist can cover,” said Malcolm Moran, Director of the Sports Capital Journalism Program. “It has become more challenging than a Super Bowl week. We are grateful for the opportunity our students have received from the National Football League.”
Dunlap graduated from IUPUI in December 2015 with a B.A. in Journalism. Her concentration was Sports Journalism with a Sports Marketing minor. She interned at WISH-TV as a news photographer in 2015. She has written for The Campus Citizen, the digital student media outlet. Dunlap’s work has appeared in the Kokomo Perspective, where she was a freelance youth sports photographer for more than two years.
Abdeldaiem, a member of the IUPUI class of 2018, was recognized as Indiana’s Student Journalist of the Year and a Hoosier State Press Association scholarship winner during her senior year at Crown Point High School. She had the opportunity to sit alongside Indiana Pacers play-by-play announcer Mark Boyle after winning first place in the Indiana High School Press Association’s sports portfolio contest. Abdeldaiem, a Psychology major, is a reporter for The Campus Citizen covering anything from the IUPUI athletic program to the Indianapolis Colts. Her work has also appeared on the website Purpose2Play.com.
The Combine marks the first event in an unprecedented series of opportunities for students in the Sports Capital Journalism Program over the next several months, including the NCAA men’s and women’s Final Four basketball tournaments and the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
The Sports Capital Journalism Program is part of the Department of Journalism and Public Relations, home of the nation’s first graduate program in sports journalism. At IUPUI, sports journalism students cover a wide variety of major sporting events and assist in research initiatives. Through campus events, students connect with leaders in sports journalism and the sports industry.
