Alfonso Trujillo, a senior Journalism major, is wrapping up his career at IUPUI with a bang after being named the School of Liberal Arts Digital Jag for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Digital Jag is the face and voice behind much of the School of Liberal Arts’ social media content during the academic year.
“I get to write blog posts and create a lot of fun content, and be involved in many projects and student events,” said Trujillo, who is completing a concentration in Public Relations. “I do my best to keep everyone involved.”
The position is part-time and works well with a student’s schedule.
Trujillo learned about the role from Benjamin Risinger, his Spring 2023 JOUR-J340 Public Relations Tactics and Techniques instructor. Conveniently enough, last year’s Liberal Arts Digital Jag, Camryn Daniels, B.A.J. ’23, was in that J340 class as well. After learning from Daniels what it takes to fulfill the position, Trujillo thought it would be a perfect role for him.
“When the Digital Jag position was announced, it grabbed my attention,” said Trujillo. “I knew I wanted to become the next Digital Jag. My background in Public Relations and Journalism, my understanding of how social media works, and the knowledge I’ve learned in my studies all worked in my favor when applying for this position.”
While this is a big responsibility for Trujillo, there are plenty of opportunities ahead that will help him further his career.
“I am excited to bring my own personal touch to social media and be involved in the community,” said Trujillo. “This opportunity is a great learning experience, which is something that, as a current student, is magical. I get to explore the field of social media and marketing.”
Trujillo spent time this past summer helping with new student orientations for the School of Liberal Arts, where he was able to work with the School’s other student ambassadors (two of which are also Journalism majors – Atiya Smith and Kamya Williams). He was also able to meet people from other departments and discovered more about what the campus has to offer.
“I am grateful for this journey,” he said. “It will be a beneficial experience when it comes to my future career.”
