Learning to interpret the past allows you to understand the circumstances and choices of today. Courses in history will provide you with foundations for professional training in fields such as law, business, environmental affairs, historic preservation, public administration, and government.
Core Courses
Of the required 15 credit hours for a minor in history, 6 credit hours should be completed from this list:
- HIST-H 105: American History I
- HIST-H 106: American History II
- HIST-H 108: Perspectives on the World to 1800
- HIST-H 109: Perspectives on the World since 1800
- HIST-H 113: Western Civilization I
- HIST-H 114: Western Civilization II
Students who pursue a minor in history have the option of choosing from three regional and two thematic concentrations:
- U.S. History
- European History
- African, Asian, and Latin American History
- History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine
- Public History
Electives (9 credits)
Of the total 15 credit hours, 9 credit hours should be taken at the 200-400 level. At least 6 of the 9 additional hours should be taken at the 300-400 level. Courses must be distributed across at least 2 of the regional or thematic course concentrations offered by the department
Regional Concentration (15 credits)
Students can take a regional concentration minor in U.S. History; European History; or African, Asian, and Latin American History
Thematic Concentration: History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine (15 credits)
The course work must be distributed as follows:
- 9 credit hours in courses on the History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine course list. Alternative courses may be selected in coordination with the History Department faculty mentor.
- 3 credit hours in either U.S. History (A-prefix courses), or European History (B-C-D-prefix courses), or African/Asian/Latin American History (E-F-G-prefix courses).
- 3 credit hours: in a second regional concentration (either U.S. History, European History, or African/Asian/Latin American History) not selected above.
History of Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine courses include, but are not limited to:
- History of Medicine and Public Health
- History of Science and Technology I
- History of Science and Technology II
- History of Consciousness and Human Evolution
- History, Environment, & the Global Anthropocene
- Scientific Revolutions, 1400-1800
- History of Computing
- Machines and the Age of Invention

Thematic Concentration: Public History (15 credits)

- 3 credit hours in H200 Introduction to Public History
- 3 credit hours in H195 Introduction to Digital Humanities
- 3 credit H425 internship experience
- 6 credit hours in courses on the Public History course list. Alternative courses may be selected in coordination with the History Department faculty mentor.

How to enroll
Students are encouraged to speak to an Undergraduate Advisor when considering a History minor. To declare the minor, you will need to complete the School of Liberal Arts online declaration form.
