Welcome to the Award Winning Africana Studies Program at IUPUI.  Africana Studies is devoted to the scholarly exploration of African and African American history, life and culture from an interdisciplinary perspective. The Program as well as various schools and departments within the University offer a variety of courses, lectures and other scholarly activities which explore different aspects of the historical and contemporary African as well as African American experience.

Our department offers the following areas of study:

  • Undergraduate Major in Africana Studies which  provides students with a transnational perspective on the life, history and culture of people of African descent in the United States, Latin America, Canada, the Caribbean Europe, and Africa.
  • Undergraduate Minors in Africana Studies which provides encompasses the scholarly exploration of the life and culture of people of Africa and the African Diaspora from an interdisciplinary perspective. 
  • Undergraduate Certificate which provides additional preparation for students currently pursuing pre-med, pre-dentistry, nursing, business, engineering, and law degrees, who may envision a future career working in Africa.
