Programs
The philosophy department has a balanced undergraduate curriculum that covers the following areas: logic, ethics, aesthetics, metaphysics, epistemology (theory of knowledge), feminist philosophy, philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, history of philosophy, Asian philosophy, American Indian philosophy, classical American philosophy, and 19th and 20th century continental European philosophy.
The department also offers an MA in philosophy with three concentrations: American philosophy, bioethics, and international research ethics. The concentration in American philosophy offers an approach to classical American philosophy and pragmatism that is conversant with mainstream analytic philosophy, and provides an especially comprehensive program for studying the work of Charles S. Peirce. The bioethics concentration seeks to integrate theory with practice to address an urgent need both in medical science and in the health care industry. The concentration in international research ethics is part of the Indiana University–Moi University Academic Research Ethics Partnership, involving the IU Center for Bioethics and Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya. The curriculum involves a mix of coursework, and an innovative practicum experience in Kenya.
