This award is presented to an IUPUI undergraduate student for outstanding achievement in a paper written on the African-American experience. The prize honors Preston Eagleson, the first black American to receive an advanced degree from Indiana University.

Given each year to an undergraduate student at IUPUI with at least nine credit hours in Africana Studies courses who have exhibited exemplary academic performance as well as leadership qualities in the discipline. Recipients of the award are nominated by members of the Africana Studies Program faculty.
