Individualized Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies Major

Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) is an interdisciplinary academic program drawing on courses from around the university which focus on women, gender and sexuality.

A minor is offered directly through the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program; however, you must pursue a Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies major through the Individualized Major Program in the School of Liberal Arts. This option allows those of you interested in issues related to gender and sexuality to design your major by drawing from the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies course listings and other university offerings. Contact the Individualized Major Program office directly for more information about the requirements, but the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies office will happily assist those pursuing this option.

The Individualized Major allows disciplined and self-motivated individuals to design unique majors of their choice with faculty supervision. It serves two groups of students:

  • Those who wish to major in traditional disciplines or interdisciplinary areas for which majors are not currently available at IUPUI
  • Those who wish to fashion unique and original interdisciplinary majors that reflect their individual experience, interests, and needs.

The Individualized Major provides a structure which allows you, in consultation with faculty members, to design majors that meet your own educational needs. Each major course of study varies in accord with the needs and interests of individual students. You will work closely with faculty advisors, and all Individualized Majors are overseen and approved by a faculty committee which ensures the integrity and rigor of each Individualized Major.

What a WGSS major did for me

Liz Forster

“I benefited from this program in many ways. I found not only a diverse and fascinating array of classes, but also it allowed me to explore intersectional education and create a sense of responsibility and ownership in my education, building a curriculum with the help of my faculty advisors. My advice to students is to broaden your horizons and ask questions! There are wonderful resources, organizations, courses, and faculty who really made a difference in my time in the program and as a Jag!”

Liz worked as an academic advisor for four years at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, while majoring in Individualized/Women’s Studies. She graduated in December 2021 with her Master of Library and Information Science. She will begin work in January as an assistant library at the library of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
