Navigating Graduate Writing Workshop Series

The University Writing Center and University Graduate Office are teaming up to offer the Navigating Graduate Writing Workshop, a two-part series that provides graduate writers with strategies for success, focused support, and an opportunity to build community with other graduate writers. The workshops are facilitated by graduate writing consultants and support our mission to mentor and empower writers, value multiple literacies and language diversity, encourage self-reflection and critical thinking, and promote a broad understanding of writing, language, and literacy.

These workshops will take place in our University Library location, UL 2125. Writers can choose to attend one or both sessions. Sign up here. For more information, please contact us at uwc@iupui.edu

10 a.m. – 12p.m: Managing Time and Academic Relationships

In this 2-hour workshop, plans for time management and working with others will be the main focus. Participants will create academic timelines for their graduate work at IUPUI and discuss technologies and habits that can help them stay on task. Participants will also discuss how to manage the stress that often pervades the life of graduate students and share strategies for overcoming writer’s block and procrastination. Additionally, discussion about selecting and working with a network of mentors will provide a space for sharing about and learning how to communicate with faculty members about participants’ research and writing.

12 – 1p.m: Lunch

Lunch is provided for all attendees, and this hour will give participants from both sessions a chance to connect with each other.

1 – 3 p.m: Writing Processes & Strategies for Academic Writing

In this 2-hour workshop, the focus will be on writing processes and practices. Graduate programs at IUPUI require various high-stakes writing components such as comprehensive exams, thesis/dissertation proposals, and theses/dissertations. In the workshop, participants will explore and share their current writing practices and will discuss practical writing and revision strategies. During the latter half of the workshop, participants will develop a plan for developing and completing their current high-stakes writing projects.
