The March 2020 IMUN conference will mark the 69th consecutive year of a Model United Nations program in Indianapolis. This makes us, with the Berkeley Model UN, the longest continuously running high schools Model UN conference in the world; both held their first meetings in 1952. The longest-running college Model UN in the United States is the Harvard Model UN, founded in 1955.
IMUN has gone through several changes over the past few decades. The program was originally organized by the YMCA of Indianapolis and the Indiana Council on World Affairs. In 1982 the program came to Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), where it was run by faculty and students in the School of Education, and later by an independent coordinator. In 2002 responsibility for IMUN moved to the Department of Political Science within the School of Liberal Arts.
Today IMUN boasts a trained college staff, and attracts high schools from Indianapolis and surrounding counties. Those who have recently taken part include the following:
