  • This event will highlight the cultural connections between Germans and Indiana and their lasting impact. 

November 5th, 2018: "A Stronger Mind for a Healthier Body: German Lebensreform, Midwestern Vegetarians, and the Politics of Resistance" Panel Discussion

Speakers: Dr. Thorsten Carstensen (IUPUI); Dr. Marcel Schmid (University of Virginia); Dr. Mark Roseman (IU Bloomington)

  • This panel discussion will examine the impact of emerging “Back to Nature” lifestyles—such as vegetarianism, nudism, gymnastics, ecological agriculture, and alternative education—on Hoosier culture around 1900 and their significance in the context of alternative lifestyle movements in the U.S. This fascinating historical constellation has not received much attention.
