International Students: Short-term Language and Cross-Cultural Programs

ICIC provides short-term language and cross-cultural programs to students from partner universities around the world. Students come to Indianapolis to improve their English skills using tailored topics that are relevant to the group. We have custom courses that cover topics like women in leadership, American families, etc. These programs include cultural field trips, as well as reputable guest speakers. Examples of activities include interactive visits to museums and sporting events, the state fair, and even short trips to nearby cities like Chicago, IL. These programs are customizable to the needs of the partnering institution and have been provided over two, three and four week periods. ICIC provides all curriculum and materials development, highly qualified teachers, and coordination of transportation and housing options.  Please click on the tabs above to learn more about our programs.


ICIC also provides short-term language and cross-cultural programs to individual students that want to attend our open enrollment three-week programs. Courses cover US culture along topics of family, leisure time and traditions. The curriculum challenges students to develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. Classes meet in the mornings and cultural excursions and speakers are provided in the afternoon. These programs are offered twice a year. The program includes curriculum and materials, highly qualified teachers and coordination of transportation and housing options.  Please click on the designated tab above to learn more about a specific program.

Open Enrollment Intercultural and English Program

Indiana University’s International Center for Intercultural Communication has hosted various programs for international students to experience U.S. culture and improve their communication skills for over 20 years.  Participants experience U.S. culture by living with host families in Indianapolis.  Students spend time focused on American cultural themes such as life in the U.S.A.


Participants in this program can expect:

  • Three-weeks of intensive cultural immersion
  • Daily speaking and listening practice with native English speakers and a classroom focus on both oral and written communication skills
  • Themed activities, field trips and discussions
  • Small-group projects
  • Opportunities to create and lead a presentation using PowerPoint, posters, drama, music, video, or photographs
  • Evaluations and a certificate of achievement
  • Immersion in American culture and activities with host families

Participants improve their English language skills while gaining cultural knowledge by:

  • Discussing the program theme
  • Expanding critical thinking and public speaking skills
  • Expressing their opinions about topics of importance

Cost of $2,950 U.S. dollars includes:

  • Tuition and materials
  • Three-week homestay
  • 16 meals per week
  • A life-changing experience

Tsuda College Women in Leadership Program

Students from Tsuda College in Japan have attended the Women in Leadership Program at IUPUI for more than 20 years.  Participants experience U.S. culture by living with host families in Indianapolis.  Students spend time focused on American cultural themes such as women in leadership.


Participants in this program can expect:

  • Three weeks of intensive cultural immersion
  • Individual and collaborative activities
  • A variety of small-group research projects to choose from
  • An opportunity to create a research portfolio and lead a presentation
  • A certificate of participation
  • Field trips to Chicago, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and a sporting event, in addition to activities with their American host families

Participants improve their English language skills while gaining cultural knowledge by:
  • Discussing women’s issues
  • Expanding critical thinking and public speaking skills
  • Expressing their opinions about topics of importance

Hakuoh University Intensive English Program

Students from Hakuoh University in Japan have attended language and intercultural communication programs at IUPUI since 1994.  Participants experience U.S. culture by living with host families in Indianapolis.  Students spend time focused on American cultural themes such as American family life.


Participants in this program can expect:

  • Two weeks of intensive culture immersion
  • Daily speaking and listening practice with native English speakers and a classroom focus on both oral and written communication skills
  • Themed activities, field trips and discussions
  • Small-group projects
  • Opportunities to create and lead a presentation using PowerPoint, posters, drama, music, video, or photographs
  • Evaluations and a certificate of achievement
  • A pizza party and other social events
  • Immersion in American culture and activities with host families
