IUPUI sports journalism Master’s students David Hayden and David Song covered the Big Ten College Football Championship Game on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium, learning to navigate COVID restrictions and sharpening their storytelling skills along the way.

Connecting with players and coaches after the game was limited due to restrictions, and the students had to manage late-night, scaled-back access, said Malcolm Moran, director of the Sports Capital Journalism Program at IUPUI. Moran supervised and mentored Hayden and Song during the experience.

Song penned a big-picture game story – “Michigan, Once More, Leaders and Best” – about the Michigan Wolverines’ blowout against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Hayden wrote ‘Hutch for Heisman…Hutch for Heisman…’ about Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who received the Grange-Griffin Most Valuable Player Award.
