A minor in Advertising is an excellent addition to any Journalism or Marketing major. The Department of Journalism and Public Relations offers two advertising minors: one for marketing majors in the Kelley School of Business and the other for majors in other areas. With this minor, you will sharpen your creative and copywriting skills by doing work related to radio ads, website copy, print, billboards, and more. You will also learn about how advertising works on social media and on web sites.
The Advertising Minor provides you with a base set of knowledge, skills, and abilities in advertising management, including advertising account management, advertising research, campaign development and execution, advertising copywriting, buying and selling, and careers in advertising.
This minor has a minimum requirement of 19 credit hours and you must maintain a grade of C or better in each course. In addition, you must complete properly distributed credit hour requirements for the baccalaureate degree in effect when you were admitted to your home school.
Note: Items identified with * have required marketing courses that may be taken as substitute for a journalism class and also counted toward the minor in Advertising. These rules apply ONLY to marketing majors.
Note: J 420 and J 463 may be taken concurrently; J 335 and J 438 may be taken concurrently
The final class, J438, is a project-based course, which provides real-world experience. You will work in groups to plan an advertising strategy start-to-finish for a local organization.
