With finals looming on the horizon, it’s good to have something to look forward to. If a celebration is what you need to push through the home stretch of the school year, you’re in luck, because IUPUI’s award winning literary and art magazine, genesis, is celebrating its 50th anniversary on Wednesday April 27th.

genesis was founded in 1972 by the Philosophy and English clubs and has grown into its own student-run organization. This semester, genesis is producing it’s 51st volume of students’ work. The magazine includes student-made art, and students’ fiction and nonfiction pieces. Its staff is made up entirely of students who dedicate hours to reading, choosing, and curating the content of each semester’s magazine. genesis won “Literary Magazine of the Year” in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021. Since 2016, they’ve received numerous other awards from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association (ICPA).

The anniversary celebration will be held in the Lilly Auditorium in the University Library from 4pm-6pm. All are welcome, no matter how many issues of genesis you have or haven’t read. Students will be given the chance to interact with the artists and writers who will be displaying their pieces outside and inside the auditorium. Interaction with them is encouraged but not required. A special copy of the magazine will be available for all who attend, as well as free t-shirts and refreshments.

We hope to see you there! In the meantime, check out previous issues of genesis in the archives and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.
