Sociologist Andrew Whitehead, co-director of the Association of Religion Data Archives at the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at IUPUI, won the 2021 Distinguished Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion for his co-authored book “Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States.”

The Distinguished Book Award recognizes the most outstanding book published by a society member or members within the past two years. The committee judges each book’s quality of scholarship, importance to the field and relevance to the larger society.

The first comprehensive empirical analysis of Christian nationalism in the United States, “Taking America Back for God” illustrates the influence of Christian nationalism on today’s most contentious social and political issues.Andrew L. Whitehead is an Associate Professor of Sociology and co-Director of the Association of Religion Data Archives in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.
