David C. Bell Theory Fellowship in Sociology

This fellowship is awarded to a student enrolled in the Sociology Master’s Degree program at the IU School of Liberal Arts on the IUPUI campus. It honors the spirit of Professor David Bell, accomplished research scholar with a passion for social theory. The fellowship was established to encourage graduate students in the Department of Sociology to complete exemplary graduate research and pursue further social science research through doctoral study.

Process

To be considered, students should submit an application that includes:

  • The approved thesis proposal, including the approval date and name of their thesis chair
  • A ‘personal statement’ submitted to a doctoral program
  • Evidence of application to a doctoral program in the social sciences
  • A Curriculum Vitae limited to 2 pages that emphasizes any research accomplishments since being in the MA program.

Criteria

  • Students must be enrolled in the graduate degree program in the Department of Sociology at IU School of Liberal Arts on the IUPUI campus and pursuing the MA thesis track for their degree;
  • must have completed 18 credit hours towards their MA degree in Sociology;
  • be enrolled in coursework the semester prior to receiving the award;
  • and have a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 point scale.

To receive this award, students must be making adequate progress towards their degree (e.g., no incompletes and all conditional acceptances met. Students must also have completed their thesis proposal requirements within the two previous calendar years prior to the deadline and show evidence of a promising research career and anticipated doctoral study.

Students may only apply once.

Applicants who demonstrate a strong understanding of social theory in their thesis proposal will receive higher consideration.
