Placement Exam

Overview and Purpose of Placement Testing

All students entering IUPUI with previous knowledge of a world language taught at IUPUI are urged to take the appropriate placement test as the best means to assess their level of proficiency. The electronic test in French, German, or Spanish is free of charge and helps students place into a more advanced class depending on their results. (Placement assessment for Arabic, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, and Latin is conducted by appropriate faculty.) Students may test out of first and/or second year of course work and qualify for special credits at a reduced fee after successfully completing the IUPUI course into which they are placed. IUPUI special credits in world languages meet distribution requirements and count toward graduation. Up to a maximum of 16 IUPUI world language special credits at the first- and second-year level may be earned after IUPUI course validation, provided that the student is not a native speaker of the language.

For example, a student placed in F203 is eligible for 10 special credits in French (F117-118-119 or F131-132) after successful F203 course completion (grade of C or higher).

SPECIAL CREDIT IN SPANISH
Students who place into S118-S119-S132-S203-S204 may request the credit for the 100-200 level courses they have skipped once they have validated the placement by passing the course they placed into with a grade of C or better.*

Students who place into the 300-level may take S311, S313, S317, S315 OR S319. One of these courses must be passed with a grade of C or better to validate placement and request credits for 100-200 level (up to 18 credits).*

SPECIAL CREDIT FOR NATIVE SPEAKERS
A native speaker of Spanish is one that has attended a High School in a country where Spanish is the official language. These students must pass S313 (Academic Writing in Spanish) with a C or better in order to be eligible for Special Credit in Spanish (S298-6 CRH MAXIMUM).

All other Latino/Hispanic students are considered near-native speakers of Spanish and must take the Placement Exam. They must then pass the course they have placed into with a C or better in order to be eligible for Special Credit in Spanish.

*Students will be assessed a fee for the credit hours.
