Majors and Minors in Spanish

The Major in Spanish

In addition to fulfilling the general group requirements for a B.A. degree established by the School of Liberal Arts, the Spanish major (beginning in the Fall of 2000) consists of a minimum of 30 credit hours in courses at the 300- and 400-level . Fifteen hours of credit must be at the 300-level, consisting of these specific courses:

  • S311 (Spanish Grammar)
  • S313 (Writing Spanish)
  • S320 (Spanish Pronunciation and Diction)
  • S360 (Introduction to Hispanic Literature)
  • S363 (Introduction to Hispanic Culture)

Fifteen credit hours of course work at the 400-level must be distributed as follows:

  • one course in literature
  • one course in culture and civilization
  • one course in linguistics
  • one elective course
  • S498: Capstone Seminar in Spanish
 
The Minor in Spanish

A minor in Spanish at IUPUI requires 15 credit hours of course work (6 credit hours must be completed on the IUPUI campus), with a grade of C (2.0) or better.

Required courses are:

  • S311 (Spanish Grammar)
  • S313 (Writing Spanish)
  • S317 (Spanish Conversation)
  • an additional 6 credit hours at the 300 or 400 level
 
Teacher Certification in Spanish

Teaching Major Requirements

The Teaching Major requires the completion of at least 36 hours, of which 30 credit hours must be in courses at the 300- and 400-levels. For a detailed description of all the requirements, see the Spanish Program Coordinator and refer to the IU School of Education section of the Campus Bulletin.

Transition to Teaching Program: T2T

Students with a B.A. in Spanish who have completed their teaching major requirements in Spanish can earn an accelerated Teacher Certification in 12 months with the School of Education . Contact the T2T Program Advisor, Sharice Breland sbreland@iupui.edu

 
Study Abroad

Programs abroad are open to students majoring in all academic disciplines and are not restricted to language majors. Study abroad options include:
