Majors and Minors in French

The Major in French

Requirements for a major in French include 30 credit hours in courses above the 100 level, including 15 hours of required courses : F203 (4 cr.), F204 (4 cr.), R300 (3 cr.), F328 (3 cr.), and F497 (1 cr.).

  • One 300- or 400-level grammar or translation course (3 cr.): F330, F402, F421, or F423.
  • One 300- or 400-level oral skills course (3 cr.): F331, F380, F480.
  • One 300- or 400-level course in French or Francophone culture (3 cr.): F307, F326, F360, F430, F450, F451, F452, F460, F461.
 
The Minor in French
Requirements for a minor in French include 14 credit hours in courses above the 100 level comprised of: F203, F204, F328, and F300 or F360.
 
Teacher Certification in French

Teaching Major Requirements

The teaching major in French requires the completion of a minimum of 36 credit hours beyond the 100 level, including 30 credit hours in 300- and 400-level courses. F300, F307, F328, F331, F360 and F421 are required . A year of a second foreign language is advisable. See also the requirements of the School of Education . Students working toward certification are urged to work with the School of Education 's advisor as well as their departmental advisor.

Transition to Teaching Program: T2T

Students with a B.A. in French who have completed their teaching major requirements in French can earn an accelerated Teacher Certification in 12 months with the School of Education . Contact the T2T Program Advisor, Sharice Breland sbreland@iupui.edu

 
Honors Program

In order to provide recognition to outstanding students in French, the department offers and Honors Program as well as H-Option courses. The program is open to all majors in the department who have earned at least 12 credit hours and carry a minimum grade point average of 3.3 overall and 3.7 in the major. .

Courses above F204 that are approved by the department may be taken for honors credit or for the H-Option. For further information, contact the Department of World Languages & Cultures.

Study Abroad

Programs abroad are open to students majoring in all academic disciplines and are not restricted to language majors. Study abroad options in France or Francophone countries include:

  • 3-week-long summer program in Strasbourg, France

  • summer programs in Paris, France, Québec, Canada or Dakar, Sénégal
  • one semester program at the Université de Rennes, at the Université d'Aix-en-Provence, and at the Université de Paris
