Olaniyan Scholars

The Olaniyan Scholars Program promotes the development of undergraduate research and professional experience through African American and African Diaspora Studies. Scholars enter into a highly structured course of study focusing on the lives, history, traditions, interests, and communities of people of African descent. The Program provides instate tuition, is renewable, and includes a stipend.

The Joan and Larry Cimino Award for Excellence in Intercultural Communication

This award is for the best paper or thesis on intercultural communication submitted by a student enrolled in a graduate course in a degree program offered through one of the departments in the IU School of Liberal Arts.

Understanding between and among disparate cultures has challenged humankind throughout history; intercultural communication, is a key element in achieving that understanding. The award is based on a belief that a disciplined approach to the study of intercultural communication can provide valuable insights toward achieving understanding among cultures. The study of intercultural communication is broadly defined to include research in areas such as language corpora, contrastive rhetoric, second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, language and communication theory, as well as other related fields.

This scholarship promotes and encourages the study of French language and literature. Established by the late Louise Fauré, a dedicated student of French at IUPUI, to honor the memory of her father Marius J. Fauré who immigrated to the U.S. from France in the early 20th century.

Created to honor the memory of Audrey Harshbarger, Jean Oswalt’s grandmother, whose belief and faith in young people and commitment to their learning through experience has inspired many, to further Indiana University's mission, and to encourage others to give to Indiana University. This award seeks to support students who study abroad because that experience develops a person’s understanding of our place in a global society, and the donors believe that this experience is integral to a person’s education.

The Sam Masarachia Scholars Program

Sam Masarachia Scholars must be interested in studies related to labor, senior citizen, and/or community activism and follow an approved course of study. Recipients participate in Masarachia seminars, internships, and related activities.

Scholarship provides full, in-state tuition (12-15 credit hours per semester) and is renewable for up to four years.

Jean Martin Maxwell Philosophy Prize

This prize is awarded to a student enrolled in the American philosophy master's program for a thesis which is judged to be superior.

This Prize honors the memory of Jean Martin Maxwell (1924-2005) who discovered a passion for the study of philosophy when, as an adult returning student, she undertook a master's degree program in the history and philosophy of education at Northern Illinois University. Her master's thesis on the Phenomenology of William James confirmed her interests, and she subsequently went on to teach introductory philosophy courses.

The Gail M. & William M. Plater International Scholarship for Community Engagement

Supports undergraduate or post-baccalaureate scholarships to enable students to learn through their engagement with the community regardless of the physical location of the activity. Recipients will devote a reasonable amount of time to a project, as determined by and under the supervision of a faculty member, consistent with the student’s learning objectives and the goals of a specific project that demonstrates learning through community engagement.

This scholarship was founded to honor the contributions of Gail and William Plater to the IUPUI campus.
