The English Department honors a graduating student who has demonstrated consistent excellence in English studies. The department bases its selection on superior scholastic achievement, faculty recommendations, and special contributions to the English program.

Peter Bassett Barlow Prize

This $150 award is given to the best paper submitted by a student enrolled in the English MA Program at IUPUI. It honors the memory of a man who served the community as a physician and whose passionate humanism and great intellect bore witness to the lifelong value of a liberal education.

Submissions must have been written for course work in the English MA program. Students may submit up to two papers for this award. Students may revise and edit their work before submitting it.

Joan and Larry Cimino Award for Excellence in Intercultural Communication

This award is for the best paper or thesis on intercultural communication submitted by a student enrolled in a graduate course in a degree program offered through one of the departments in the IU School of Liberal Arts.

Understanding between and among disparate cultures has challenged humankind throughout history; intercultural communication, is a key element in achieving that understanding. The award is based on a belief that a disciplined approach to the study of intercultural communication can provide valuable insights toward achieving understanding among cultures. The study of intercultural communication is broadly defined to include research in areas such as language corpora, contrastive rhetoric, second language acquisition, second language pedagogy, language and communication theory, as well as other related fields.

Frank N & Patricia Owings Scholarship in English

This award will be given to undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of English at the School of Liberal Arts. Recipients must be majoring in one of the following concentrations: creative writing, literature, English studies, or writing and literacy. Preference will be given to students who are juniors, in good academic standing and are Indiana residents.

Collaborative Writing Award

This award is for an outstanding collaborative writing project originating in an English department writing and literacy class.
Projects submitted for this award should have been co-written by at least two authors, with the work equally shared among the participants.

Courses qualifying for this award include the following: Eng. W210, W230, W231, W262, W270, W310, W313, W315, W318, W320, W331, W366, W377, W390, W400, W412, W426, and W496.

Creative Nonfiction Writing Award

This award of $100 is presented to an IUPUI undergraduate student demonstrating excellence in a creative nonfiction piece.

You may submit up to two essays. Work entered in this contest should come from true, real-life experiences or situations and may not also be entered in the Essay Award, the Eric Sharp Gateway Fiction Award, the Rebecca Pitts Fiction Award, or the Mary Louise Rea Short Story Award. Works written in W207, W301, and W401 may not be submitted for this award.

Eric Sharp Gateway Fiction Award

This award of $400 is for the best short story written in W206: Introduction to Creative Writing or W207: Introduction to Fiction Writing from the past year (last spring, summer, or fall semester). This award is given in memory of Eric Sharp, a former IUPUI student.

For the Gateway Fiction Award, students may submit one story. Students may revise and edit their work before submitting it. Works submitted for the Gateway Fiction Award should not derive from the author’s real-life experiences and cannot also be submitted for the Creative Nonfiction Award.

Eric Sharp Gateway Poetry Award

This award will be given to the student with the best poem written in an introductory-level creative writing course. This award is given in memory of Eric Sharp, a former IUPUI student.

Essay Award in English

This award of $50 is presented to an IUPUI undergraduate student for an outstanding critical, analytical, or expository essay originating in an English department writing and literacy class. Essays submitted for this award should involve inquiry and can be on any topic. Courses qualifying for this award include the following: Eng. W210, W230, W231, W262, W270, W310, W313, W315, W318, W320, W331, W366, W377, W390, W400, W411, W412, W426, and W496. Writing from W131 and W140 should be submitted to the Hal Tobin Award.

Students may submit up to two separate pieces.

Note: If your work focuses on topics in Writing and Literacy, please submit it to the Writing and Literacy Award instead of this award. Work entered in this contest may not also be entered in the Creative Nonfiction Writing Award contest. This contest does not focus on “creative nonfiction” in the same sense.

This award of $100 is presented to an IUPUI undergraduate student for an outstanding project composed in a writing and literacy course that focuses on a topic or issue in the field(s) of composition/writing studies/rhetoric/literacy studies. Such projects may include any of the following:

• research into writing practices;
• critical reflections on writing processes;
• explorations of literacy; • theory or theory-informed practice on the learning and teaching of writing;
• analytical discussion of or research on any concept from the field(s) of composition/rhetoric/writing studies/literacy studies.

Barbara E. and Karl R. Zimmer Graduate Scholarship in English

This scholarship is to support graduate students enrolled in the Department of English graduate program with an applied linguistics or TESOL concentration in the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Recipients will have a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by high GPA and/or other appropriate documentation as determined by the selection committee. Preference will be given to graduate students in English applied linguistics affiliated with the International Center for Intercultural Communication (ICIC) at IUPUI. If there are no eligible students in a given year, other outstanding graduate students in the Department may be considered.

Irving J. Levy Scholarship

This scholarship is for students enrolled in the General Studies Degree Program who demonstrate scholastic achievement or financial need. The scholarship is intended to go towards the cost of tuition and must be used within the academic year it is given.

The recipients will be selected on the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee. The number, amount, and recipient(s) of the scholarship will be determined by the Scholarship Committee of the school.

This fund is to support undergraduate scholarships. Recipients will be enrolled in the General Studies Degree Program at IUPUI who have a record of academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4 point scale and who have submitted an application for the scholarship. The number, amount, and recipients of the scholarship will be determined by the scholarship selection committee.

Lippman's "Fresh Start" Scholarship

The scholarship will support undergraduate scholarships for students in the General Studies Degree Program at IUPUI who previously "stopped out" of post secondary education from Indiana University, have earned a minimum of 30 college credit hours, and have a record of academic performance as demonstrated by a cumulative GPA of 1.5‐2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

William M. Plater General Studies International Scholarship

Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties Emeritus William M. Plater is a strong advocate for IUPUI’s nontraditional students. This scholarship was created in his honor.

This scholarship will be given to a student enrolled in the General Studies Degree Program within the school of Liberal Arts who have an interest in adding an international educational experience to their portfolio while pursuing their undergraduate degree.

Should no applications for international experience be submitted by the posted deadline, the committee may select a qualified candidate requesting domestic experience outside Indiana.

Muhammad Shafi Memorial Scholarship

Founded in honor and memory of Muhammad Shafi who was a firm believer in the Islamic faith. He was an honorable man with no more than a middle school education who built his own multi-factory business from the ground up. He was admired by many in the textile business in Karachi, Pakistan, but he always remained a humble man, remembering that what he had was a blessing and should never be taken for granted. No matter how little or how much he had, he always remembered to pay his charity and help those less fortunate than himself. This scholarship is to honor not only his memory but his religious belief in the importance of “continuous charity.”

This scholarship is to support undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Liberal Arts who demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of individuals and communities through study in the humanities and social sciences with a focus on individual and community health, have a minimum GPA of 2.75, and have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years provided that the recipients continue to meet the criteria and have received the recommendation of the Scholarship Committee for renewal.

Brand Fellowship in Bioethics

This endowed fellowship may be awarded to a new or returning student in either the Bioethics or International Research Ethics concentrations of the Philosophy MA program in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. The fellowship award includes a $10,000 stipend from which health & dental insurance will be drawn, if needed. The purpose of the fellowship is to support a research project that concretely applies philosophical/ethical principles to real-life situations in the health care or biomedical research context. The project should connect the student with faculty and resources in one or all of the following: the Myles Brand Chair in Cancer Research in the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, the IU Center for Bioethics, or the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health at IUPUI.

Michael Burke/John Tilley Fund for Graduate Students

The Philosophy Department's Burke-Tilley fund is intended specifically for graduate students. The purpose of the fund is to help graduate students with certain costs associated with their graduate degrees or certificates, such as applying to PhD programs, attending professional conferences, and the like. The fund covers costs incurred or to be incurred during the current academic year, including the summers. The fund is funded by an anonymous but generous alumnus, and is named to commemorate the donor's two most inspiring teachers: Michael Burke and John Tilley.

Jean Martin Maxwell Philosophy Prize

This prize is awarded to a student enrolled in the American philosophy master's program for a significant essay which is judged to be superior.

This Prize honors the memory of Jean Martin Maxwell (1924-2005) who discovered a passion for the study of philosophy when, as an adult returning student, she undertook a master's degree program in the history and philosophy of education at Northern Illinois University. Her master's thesis on the Phenomenology of William James confirmed her interests, and she subsequently went on to teach introductory philosophy courses.
