In Memory and Recognition of Rowland A. (Tony) Sherrill

The Rowland A. Sherrill Religious Studies Awards are made possible by the generosity of friends and family of Rowland A. "Tony" Sherrill (1944-2003). Educated at Eckerd College (B.A.), the University of Kentucky (M.A.), and the University of Chicago (M.A., Ph.D.), Professor Sherrill joined the IUPUI faculty in 1973. He rose to the rank of Chancellor's Professor and was the inaugural holder of the Millennium Chair in the School of Liberal Arts. Beloved by students and colleagues, he served for seventeen years as chair of the Religious Studies Department and was a founding editor of the IUPUI-based journal Religion and American Culture. His publications included The Prophetic Melville: Experience, Transcendence, and Tragedy (1979) and Road-Book America: Contemporary Culture and the New Picaresque (2000).

1. Rowland A. Sherrill Prize in Religious Studies: Essay Contest

Intended to recognize the best paper submitted in an essay contest. In addition to the monetary benefit, students should consider how this award could enhance applications to graduate school and/or employers by demonstrating evidence that an applicant can formulate and argue a thesis well.

2. Rowland A. Sherrill Outstanding Religious Studies Student

This award is given annually, by vote of the faculty, to an undergraduate who has made substantial contributions to the life of the department through scholarship and service.
Amount: up to $1,000

3. Tony Sherrill Up-and-Coming Student Award

This award recognizes a student in her/his first two years as a major or minor in the Department of Religious Studies who shows great academic promise and has contributed to fostering a greater understanding of religious studies on campus.
Amount: up to $500

Loretta A. Lunsford Scholarship

Funds student-faculty collaboration on a project related to teaching. In 2016-2017 Allison Hedrick (Religious Studies minor ’16) is helping launch a project on Teaching about Religion in the Public Schools.

Joseph and Lillian Zeglin Scholarship in the Humanities
Funds a declared major in Liberal Arts who has an academic and intellectual commitment to and excellence in the humanities. Religious Studies major Kasen Welling received this award for 2016-2017.

Rebecca E. Pitts Memorial Scholarship
Funds outstanding seniors in attaining an extraordinary educational experience that will enhance their opportunity for advanced study. Religious Studies minor Lyla Mahmoud received this award for 2016-2017.

A full-tuition scholarship for students interested in studies related to labor, senior citizen, and/or community activism and follow an approved course of study.
