Ramla Bandele joined the department in June 2003. She teaches American politics, urban politics, and African-American politics.
Dr. Bandele is a native of Indianapolis, and began her undergraduate studies at IUPUI before graduating from IU Bloomington. She then spent several years in Illinois state government - working as a budget analyst for the Office of Management and Budget - and in Chicago city government.
She completed her Ph.D. at Northwestern University, where her dissertation looked at the Black Star Line, a shipping company owned by African-Americans in the early 20th century, the experience of which says much about how even a disadvantaged community can attract enough resources to have both a national and an international economic impact. Her book Black Star: African American Activism in the International Political Economy was published by the University of Illinois Press in 2008.
In 2002-03, Ramla was a research fellow at the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies at the University of Rochester.
