Margie Ferguson joined the IUPUI Department of Political Science in 1996, with a BA in political science from the University of Southern Mississippi, and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Her teaching interests within the field of American politics include state and local politics, executive politics and legislative politics. Her research examines state politics and executive leadership, and her publications have appeared in the Journal of Politics, State Politics and Policy Quarterly, Women and Politics, Political Psychology and Publius: The Journal of Federalism. She is also the editor of The Executive Branch of State Government: People, Process and Politics (ABC CLIO 2006).
Professor Ferguson was chair of the department from 2008 to 2012, was acting associate dean for academic affairs at the IUPUI School of Liberal Arts in the fall semester of 2011, and currently serves as Indiana University’s assistant vice president for statewide academic relations within the Office of the Executive Vice President for University Regional Affairs, Planning and Policy. In this role, she coordinates processes across the university for degree and program approvals and assists in procedures related to faculty promotion and tenure cases. An authority on state and local politics, she also works with IU’s government relations staff and represent new university degree programs and academic policies before the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
