Interested in Majoring in Philosophy?

Here’s how to do it:

Step 1

Visit the SLA student affairs office (Cavanaugh 401), no appointment needed. Tell the receptionist that you want to major in philosophy. The receptionist will do a bit of paperwork—it takes very little time—and you’ll officially be a philosophy major.

Step 2

Take three introductory philosophy courses:

  • P110, Intro. to Philosophy
  • P120, Ethics
  • P162, Logic (may be replaced by P265, Elementary Symbolic Logic)

Add seven more philosophy courses, at least five of them should be at the 300 level or above.

Be sure to earn a minimum grade of C (2.0) in each philosophy course, and that each is at least three credits.

Step 3

Celebrate.

That's it.

There’s no set order in which you must take the courses, However, it’s highly recommended that you take the 100-level courses first.

If you have any questions about the Philosophy Major, or want to discuss either what courses you should take or the options for completing an honors program, please contact Professor Kahn.

A list of courses that are currently being offered is found here.
