Department of Philosophy

Undergraduate Program

The philosophy department has two faculty advisors for undergraduate students in philosophy: Luise Morton and John Tilley. Students with questions about the undergraduate philosophy major or minor should contact one of these advisors.

Undergraduate Major in Philosophy:

Requirements:

A minimum of 30 credit hours in philosophy, including:

  1. A basic survey of philosophy (either P110, Intro. to Philosophy; or S110, Intro. to Philosophy–Honors).
  2. A basic course in ethics (either P120, Ethics; or S120, Ethics–Honors).
  3. A basic course in logic (either P162, Logic; or P265, Intro. to Symbolic Logic).
  4. A minimum of 15 credit hours at the 300 level or above.
  5. A minimum grade of "C" (2.0) in each philosophy course.

To assure a properly balanced program of study, philosophy majors should consult with a departmental advisor.  Any student who wants to major in philosophy should (a) contact one of the philosophy department advisors about it and (b) visit the receptionist in the Liberal Arts Student Affairs office (Cavanaugh 401). The receptionist will fill out a form or two—it only takes a minute—to get the student started on the major.

Double Majors: Students planning to major in a discipline other than philosophy are encouraged to consider philosophy as a second major. Students planning such a double major should consult with one of the philosophy department advisors about how to get started, and about courses most suitable to their interests.

Undergraduate Minor in Philosophy:

Requirements:

A minimum of 15 credit hours in philosophy, including:

  1. One course from each of at least two of these three groups of courses:
