Eagan Honored with the IUPUI Hine Medal

Three outstanding Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis alumni this week received the Maynard K. Hine Medal in recognition of their significant contributions in support of the IUPUI campus and its alumni programs.

The IUPUI Alumni Council honored Tonja Conour Eagan, Stephen A. Brinegar and Karen M. Yoder as 2012 Hine Medal recipients during the annual IUPUI Alumni Leadership Dinner on Feb. 23, 2012, at University Place Conference Center and Hotel. More than 200 campus administrators, faculty, alumni and community supporters attended the event.

New Books on Africa Examine Economy and Women’s Issues

Two newly released books on contemporary Africa—one on its economic ties to other nations, the other on women’s roles to family and society—reveal intricate relationships affecting the continent’s sustained growth and development. The volumes are Gender, Sexuality, and Mothering in Africa (Africa World Press) and Globalization and Sustainable Development in Africa (University of Rochester Press).

The books are edited by Professor Bessie House-Soremekun, director of Africana studies in the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Toyin Falola, Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin.

IUPUI Professor Will Deliver Keynote at Awards Ceremony for Creative Teenagers

Karen KovacikIndiana State Poet Laureate Karen Kovacik, a professor of English at IUPUI, will be the keynote speaker for the Central and Southern Indiana Scholastic Art and Writing Awards ceremony.

Almost 600 middle and high school students will receive Central and Southern Indiana Scholastic Art & Writing Awards during a ceremony at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at Clowes Memorial Hall, 4602 Sunset Ave. on the Butler University campus.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the nation’s largest, longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts.

IUPUI Center Helps International Economics Professor Bridge Language Divide

Lauren Harvey and Hisaya KitaokaAfter 20 years traveling the world as a Japanese manufacturing company executive, Hisaya Kitaoka found a new career he loved, teaching international economics at Franklin College which is 20 miles south of downtown Indianapolis.

Kitaoka received glowing reviews for his classroom skills, but supervisors told him his writing needed improvement.

Edward E. Curtis IVEdward E. Curtis IV, professor of religious studies in the School of Liberal Arts at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, has co-founded the Journal of Africana Religions, the world’s only refereed journal devoted to research on the religions of African-descended people in global perspective.

“This journal signifies a rich coming-of-age in the study of African and African Diasporic studies,” said scholar, author and activist Cornel West.
