The 2012 Joseph Taylor Symposium hosted by the IU School of Liberal Arts and its Department of History has been selected as part of the 2012 IndyTalks series. The School is among more than 20 organizations participating in the series of community programs which explore the idea of "Indy at the Crossroads."
Held on Wednesday, February 29, the Joseph Taylor Symposium will focus on "The Campus for the Community" and the role an urban university plays in a diverse city. [Learn more about the Taylor Symposium]
IndyTalks is a collaboration dedicated to fostering a sense of community through respectful and creative civic dialogue. Thirty years ago, Indianapolis decided to be an amateur sports capital. Since 2000, its three professional sports teams have played for world championships and 2012 sees the city host its first Super Bowl. Along with the changing sports landscape, a new generation of citizens has taken root with new concerns such as the arts, public transportation, and better access to education. Indy must again examine itself and decide what direction it needs to take to be a successful metropolitan city.
Participants in IndyTalks will share ideas, information, experiences, and assumptions in a civic and civil manner that leads to learning and informs the public good. Program partners are organizations connected to the arts, humanities, history, religion, film, education, media and more.
In 2010, more than a dozen community partners launched a year-long initiative called IndyTalks. The initial series encouraged Indianapolis residents to discuss - from a variety of perspectives - the future of Indiana in an era of globalization.
The 2012 IndyTalks series will begin on Jan. 12 at 1 PM, when 90.1 WFYI-FM will examine the recent Indianapolis census and the effects a new demographic has on the city’s government and neighborhoods. Listeners are encouraged to participate in the conversation via phone calls, Twitter, and Facebook.
A second Liberal Arts program, the Spirit & Place Festival, managed by the Polis Center, is also part of IndyTalks. The Festival, on "Play" will take place in November 2012. [Learn more about Spirit & Place]
Additional IndyTalks programs will take place throughout the year. For more information about IndyTalks, including a complete 2012 schedule, visit http://www.indytalks.info/.
