The Indiana Center for Intercultural Communication (ICIC) is sponsoring a scientific writing workshop for international postdoctoral researchers. ICIC, a language and cultural training center that is part of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, is organizing the workshop to help scientific researchers for whom English is a second language hone their writing skills for publication.
"Medical researchers are often required to publish their work in international scientific journals in English. This can be challenging when English is not a writer’s first language," said Dr. Ulla Connor, PhD, Director of ICIC. "The workshop will involve text analysis as well as focused discussions on language, which together should help participants make better strategic language choices as they write."
The workshop will be held October 8, 2010 from 9- 4 p.m. at the Riley Outpatient Center Conference Room. Christine Feak, from the English Language Institute at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, will lead the program.
"This will be a highly interactive and practical workshop, in which participants will analyze published work with an eye toward developing, learning, improving," Feak said. The focus will be on medical journal articles, she added.
"To deepen their understanding of writing in their own fields, participants are encouraged to bring for analysis well written articles from their own research as well as drafts of articles that they are hoping to publish," Feak said.
The schedule will be divided into two three-hour sessions, with lunch provided in between. Text analysis will be done in both large and small group discussions.
Ms. Feak has been at the University of Michigan’s English Language Institute since 1988, where she is the lead lecturer for academic writing courses and Coordinator of the Summer Language Program, English for Academic Purposes. She is a sought after presenter of academic writing workshops around the world. She has co-authored, with John Swales, University of Michigan, numerous academic and research writing books, including English in Today’s Research World: A Writing Guide, Academic Writing for Graduate Students: Essential Tasks and Skills, and Abstracts and the Writing of Abstracts.
The fee for the workshop is $75 for IU/ IUPUI affiliates. Interested participants should discuss funding options with their supervisor or school dean. To register, contact ICIC at 274-2555 or icic@iupui.edu. For more information on ICIC or the workshop, visit ICIC’s website at liberalarts.iupui.edu/icic.
