Visual Language Lab

This facility is best used by students in the American Sign Language and ASL/English Interpreting programs or any language courses where viewing the subject is as important as what they say.

Campus Location

The Visual Language Lab is located in Cavanaugh Hall (CA)421.

Liberal Arts Classes that make use of this facility

The major use is from ASL and ASL/English interpreting students and classes. These classes include ASL-A 131 Intensive Beginning American Sign Language I, ASL-A 132 Intensive Beginning American Sign Language II, ASL-I 303 American Sign Language for Interpreters, ASL-I 261 Basic Interpreting Skills, ASL-I 363 Interpreting Community Texts: Consecutive, ASL-I 365 Interpreting Community Texts: Simultaneous, ASL-I 405 Practicum, ASL-I 340 Discourse Analysis: English, and ASL-I 342 Disclosure Analysis. It is also used quite a bit by English as a Second Language classes now known as the English for Academic Purposes Program. Usually it is course G012 Listening and Speaking for Academic Purposes or G020 Communication Skills for Graduate Students and International Teaching Assistants.

Having trouble?

There is always a lab consultant on duty when the lab is in use. If the problem or requirement is beyond the scope of the consultant the ultimate authority is the Teleproduction Supervisor

Can I use this facility?

The Visual Language Lab is available to all the students at IUPUI, but most of them don’t know about it and would not need it. Generally work in the lab is assigned by the instructor or entire classes will come in for class work.

How can I become more involved?

One can simply come in during open lab and sign in or take a course which uses the lab or become a lab consultant.

Hours

The lab has open hours which are posted on the door. Only classes need to reserve the lab space in advance.

Is there a comparable facility on campus?

No other school has facilities like the Visual Language Lab.

This facility is supported by the School of Liberal Arts and supports courses in English.

What type of instruction/attention does this facility offer?

The lab consultants that are on duty during open hours are trained to help students use the facilities. Although they do not perform any educational function most of them know ASL and can often answer general ASL questions.
