The 23rd Annual Joseph Taylor Symposium
The Campus for the Community

February 29, 2012, IUPUI Campus Center

Students, faculty, and staff, and members of the Indianapolis community are invited to submit abstracts for poster presentations at the 23rd Annual Joseph Taylor Symposium, February 29, 2012.  The symposium honors Dr. Joseph T. Taylor, Professor of Sociology from 1965 to 1983 and the first Dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, for his many contributions to the university and the community.

Leaders of Dr. Taylor’s generation, who established IUPUI more than 40 years ago, envisioned a university that would serve Indiana’s capital city and its citizens.  The symposium will examine how this institution of higher education and the work of its people have shaped the city and how the university has been shaped by the local community.  The first panel will explore the historical context of urban higher education. The second and third will look at the myriad ways in which students, faculty, and staff are engaged today with neighborhoods, local organizations, Indianapolis businesses, and city government.

To complement those discussions, we invite posters and electronic and other visual presentations that showcase community-engaged research, teaching, and learning.  In addition to presenting their own work, faculty members are encouraged to integrate relevant poster projects into their classes to promote student submissions or to invite their students to participate on an individual basis.  Participants from educational institutions other than IUPUI are most welcome. The following is a list of some possible approaches to the symposium’s theme that poster submissions might take:

  • Demonstrations of research, teaching, scholarship, or other projects on Indianapolis; its neighborhoods, people, politics, culture, or history
  • Presentations about service learning projects or approaches
  • Examples of civic engagement initiatives
  • Projects or tools developed for Indianapolis partners, clients, or organizations
  • Questions about preparing citizens for 21st century jobs and civic participation in an increasingly globalized, digital, and changing society
  • Examinations of IUPUI’s or other urban universities’ impact on urban life, local communities, or groups

To submit a poster presentation proposal, please fill out the attached form and return it by February 3, 2012. Questions may be addressed and forms may be returned to John Dichtl, jdichtl@iupui.edu in the Department of History and the National Council on Public History office.
