The University Writing Center helps students from across the IUPUI campus as they work on papers and projects. At the Center, experienced faculty and student consultants guide students through the writing process in a stress-free environment. In 2012, a record 8209 were served at the Writing Center’s two locations with 63% of visits coming from departments and schools outside of the English department.
A Writing Center strength is the collaboration that takes place between faculty and student consultants, as student consultants provide services to other students while developing their own skills. In order to be eligible for a Writing Center position the consultants must first excel at writing. Classwork and a Writing Center internship prepares them for the tutoring.
Consultants help their fellow students feel confident about their writing. The Writing Center promotes student agency-students are responsible for their own work and decision-making. Consultants are on hand, however, to help students flesh out their paper topics and lend support during the writing process.
New technologies, such as WCOnline, make it easy for students to get the assistance they need by enabling students to self-schedule their appointments. ZOnline allows the Center staff to provide online consulting for students unable to make it to campus. VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) phones allow consultants better communication opportunities over the internet between the Cavanaugh location and the University Library location. Students can choose to review their papers in hard copy or on computers available in both locations.
The University Writing Center is located in Room CA 008H in the basement of Cavanaugh Hall. The University Library location is in Room UL 2125 behind and to the left of the University Library Reference Desk, which is on the south side of the library’s 2nd floor.
