Submit Proposals through the Dean’s Office
School of Liberal Arts Policy for Submitting External Grants and Awards
In September 2008, the School of Liberal Arts announced its policy for supporting external grants and awards. The policy states that all applications for external funding in support of research, teaching, and service must be routed through either the office of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs or the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, for approval signature.
The policy also states that the School is under no obligation to support the project, other than as required by law or Indiana University, if your application directly to the funding agency did not receive prior approval.
The signature of a Dean’s Office representative indicates School approval of the support you seek, whether it be a course buyout for a research project, or fringe benefits or other costs not covered by a fellowship.
Therefore, it is very important that you inform your department chair and discuss your plans with the Dean of the School before you file your application! Your department chair must find a replacement when you buy out of one or more courses, or take leave to accept a fellowship. Some fellowships provide salary and fringe benefit support, but others cover only salary, or partial salary. If you want the School to provide additional financial support when you win an award, you must request it ahead of time, so the Dean can plan for the additional expense.
