Internal Funding Opportunities
Fall Semester 2012 Submissions
Wednesday, September 5 (SLA Internal Deadline August 29), 5 pm
Enhanced Mentoring Program with Opportunities for Ways to Excel in Research (EMPOWER)
The EMPOWER program has been developed to support IUPUI faculty who are historically underrepresented and/or excluded populations in their discipline or area of scholarship and historically denied admission to higher education or that discipline, 1) to become successful in sponsored research and scholarly activity, and 2) to achieve significant professional growth and advancement. The program sustains mentorship opportunities through the EMPOWER Grant Program, supporting achievement of excellence in research and scholarly activity, and optimal attainment of academic career goals and objectives.

Funding Opportunities for Research Commercialization and Economic Success (FORCES)
The FORCES program is designed to support IUPUI researchers in the successful transformation of their research findings into commercially viable outcomes. The key goals of FORCES are to support: 1) realization of short-term projects that will enhance commercial value of IUPUI intellectual property assets, by facilitating commercialization of inventions, technologies, or other intellectual property derived from existing research projects, and 2) development of research initiatives that show great promise for commercialization of the research outcomes.
Monday, October 1 (SLA Internal Deadline September 24), 5 pm
OVPIA Overseas Conference Fund Grants
Open to all IU faculty, for travel expenses for participation in an international conference. The faculty member must be presenting a paper, participating in a poster session, be a panel member, or giving a keynote speech. Conferences held in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Mexico are excluded. The maximum award is $1,500.

Research Support Funds Grants (RSFG)
The Research Support Funds Grant (RSFG) program is designed to enhance the research mission of IUPUI by supporting research projects and scholarly activities that are sustainable through external funding. It includes a category for Assistant Professors.
New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities Exploratory Travel Fellowships
Up to $3,000 to support national and international travel for faculty pursuing new and innovative research projects.
Submission deadlines are every 2 months. The next deadline is Friday December 14 (SLA Internal Deadline December 7)

New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities: New Frontiers
Major grants of up to $50,000 to assist in the development of innovative works of scholarship or creative activity.
Thursday, November 15 (SLA Internal Deadline November 8), 5 pm
International Development Fund (IDF)
The IDF grant was developed to enhance the international research and scholarly activity focus of the IUPUI academic mission. Generally, the IDF grant serves as venture capital to stimulate additional funding for international research and scholarly activity, which have strong potential to generate indirect cost recovery from extramural sources.

IU Collaborative Research Grants
The IUCRG is open to faculty on all Indiana University campuses. Funding decisions will result from a competitive peer review of proposals in response to this call. The Vice President for Research will make the final funding decisions, based on reviewers’ recommendations. The maximum funding per project will be $75,000 but in exceptional cases, when there is a convincing justification, this maximum could be exceeded. The goals of this competition are to facilitate and support outstanding research and cutting edge discoveries by teams of experts who have not worked together previously in the project’s subject matter. Teams should include experts from different campuses, schools, departments, or disciplines. This opportunity is open to all fields of research.

Release Time for Research (RTR)
IUPUI maintains a robust research enterprise. To support faculty in having adequate time to prepare competitive proposals, the IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research has developed the Release Time for Research (RTR) internal funding mechanism. This funding program allows IUPUI faculty a "buy out" of teaching time to prepare high quality grant/contract proposals for submission to external funding agencies. It also supports non-tenure track faculty who are full-time senior lecturers or clinical track faculty possessing terminal degrees relevant to their fields, and who have a desire to engage in research or creative activity in an area that directly relates to their teaching or service mission.
New Frontiers/New Currents
New Currents funds grants of to $20,000 to fund workshops, symposia, or small conferences with major distinguished thinkers on timely topics of significant and broad interest.
Friday, February 15 (SLA Internal Deadline February 8), 5 pm
Developing Diverse Researchers with InVestigative Expertise (DRIVE)
The DRIVE program is designed to enhance the diversity and research and creative activity mission of IUPUI. Faculty from historically underrepresented populations, usually defined as African-American, Latino-American, Native American, Pacific Islanders, and women are particularly encouraged to apply. The DRIVE program supports projects that have the potential for sustainability through external funding.

IUPUI Arts and Humanities Initiative Grant (IAHI)
The IAHI Grant Program exists to support campus-wide attainment of excellence in research and creative activity in arts and humanities. It is designed to enhance the research and creative activity mission of IUPUI by supporting research projects and scholarly activities that are conducted by arts and humanities faculty. The program is intended to stimulate existing and new research and creative activity, and to support faculty in becoming competitive in securing external funding and sponsorship. There are 3 categories. Category A requires a School/Department match. Be sure discuss your plans with Dean Jeffrey Wilson and your Department chair before the SLA Internal Deadline!

Center on Philanthropy Research Grants
The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University conducts, coordinates, and supports research building a broad base of knowledge about the causes and consequences of philanthropic behavior involving individuals, communities, and institution. Faculty members from all disciplines conducting related research are encouraged to apply.

New Currents funds grants of to $20,000 to fund workshops, symposia, or small conferences with major distinguished thinkers on timely topics of significant and broad interest.
Internal Funding Submission Procedure
- Remember, it is very important that you discuss the financial implications of your proposal (matching funds, course buyouts, and sabbatical or other leave), with your department chair and Associate Dean Jeffrey Wilson well before the submission deadline.
- Give your Chair or the Associate Dean plenty of time to write a thoughtful letter of support if the grant program asks for a letter. They need a draft of your proposal narrative too. We recommend 2 weeks!
- Please meet with Edith Millikan to discuss your budget,budget narrative, and proposal narrative, preferably two weeks prior to the submission deadline.
- Please send Research proposal narratives to Associate Dean Jeffrey Wilson (jeswilso@iupui.edu). Copy Edith Millikan (emillika@iupui.edu).
- Please send Curriculum development and Teaching proposals to Associate Dean Marianne Wokeck (mwokeck@iupui.edu). Copy Edith Millikan (emillika@iupui.edu).
- Edith Millikan will also review your budget and notify you of Dean’s Office approval before you submit your materials to the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) or other appropriate office. We require five business days prior to submission deadline to complete the final review.

- For New Frontiers web-based submissions, please email your final proposal narrative, budget and budget narrative.
