Fellowship Proposals
- The individual scholar, not Indiana University, is usually the applicant and awardee
- Many fellowship-granting organizations make their awards to the scholar, not the institution.
- They may also require you to submit your proposal yourself, either through their on-line application or by mail.
- Email your proposal narrative and budget (if required) to the Dean’s Office
- Discuss the financial implications of your proposal with your department chair and Dean Blomquist before submission.
- Many fellowships require you to take a leave of absence, or release time.
- Many fellowships assume your University will commit additional resources, such as fringe benefits.
- The School needs to plan in advance to ensure these resources are available when needed.
- Give your Chair or the Dean plenty of time to write a thoughtful letter of support. We recommend two weeks notice.
- You are encouraged to obtain feedback on your proposal narrative before submission. Please submit it at least five business days before the deadline.
- Please send Research proposals to Associate Dean Philip Goff (pgoff@iupui.edu). Copy Edith Millikan (emillika@iupui.edu).
- Please send Curriculum development or Teaching proposals to Interim Associate Dean Margaret Ferguson (mferguso@iupui.edu). Copy Edith Millikan (emillika@iupui.edu).
- Dr. Goff’s or Dr. Ferguson’s email response indicates acknowledgement of your proposal.
- "Limited Submission" Fellowships, including NEH Summer Stipends
- Some funders require that applicants be nominated by their institution to apply, or otherwise limit the number of applications from each campus or institution.
- Read the guidelines carefully!
- The most notable limited submission is the NEH Summer Stipend.
- If your submission to the agency was not nominated, it will be rejected immediately.
- Check the IU Limited Submission website for upcoming deadlines, a list of all funding opportunities, and submission procedures.
- The internal deadline precedes the funder’s deadline.
- For nomination, you must submit your project narrative to Etta Ward, Director of Research Development, Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at IUPUI, prior to the agency submission deadline. She notify you if your proposal is selected. Contact Etta Ward (emward@iupui.edu, 317-278-8427) for further information.
- If nominated, please route your proposal for approval using ERA, according to the same procedure as for Standard Research Proposals and Contracts.
