This final post and set of photos are about Thursday’s events, which crowned the Nobel week.

On Thursday afternoon, the official Prize Ceremony was held in the Stockholm Concert Hall.  If you saw the front page of the Indianapolis Star on Friday, you saw an excellent Associated Press photo of Lin Ostrom receiving her medal from the King of Sweden.  The ceremony is a majestic event in a beautiful setting.  An orchestra and a vocal soloist played and sang between speeches and awards.  The laureates were introduced by category-Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, …

Hej,

The Nobel Foundation hosted a reception at the Nordic Museum this evening for the laureates and their guests.  The museum is an impressive structure, although its collections are devoted to everyday life in Sweden over the years.

The reception provided an opportunity to get some photographs of a few of the current colleagues and former students who are here to celebrate Lin Ostrom’s receipt of this year’s prize in Economics.

And now for something completely different (or at least unrelated to the Nobel Prizes)...

Upon hearing that I would be in Stockholm this week, a number of folks asked if I have relatives here.  Blomquist is a Swedish name, and both my father’s father and my mother’s mother emigrated from Sweden to the U.S.  So here are two quick notes on the personal dimension of this visit, which is my first to Sweden.

I do have relatives in Sweden, but only one who lives in Stockholm.  Niklas Dahlstrand is a second cousin-our …

Hej,

Today the laureates in Physics, Chemistry, and Economics gave their Nobel Prize lectures, in the Aula Magna (Great Hall) at Stockholm University.  The principal topics of each lecture were a summary of the work for which the laureate was receiving his or her Prize, and some background on how that work came to be.

For those of us from Indiana, of course, Lin Ostrom’s lecture was the main focus.  (The photo shows the chair of this year’s Nobel Economics Prize Selection Committee introducing her.)

Hers was just one of eight lectures given today, …

Hej from Stockholm,

The person hugging Lin Ostrom in the photo is Patty Lezotte, a staff member at the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis.  Immediately in the background is Nicole Todd, another Workshop staff member.

It says a little something about Lin that she used some of the limited number of invitations available to her to have Patty and Nicole come to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize ceremonies this week.  As I was completing graduate school at Bloomington and about to …

God dag,

That’s "good day" or "hello" in Swedish, although the informal and more common greeting is "hej" (like "hi") which is pronounced "hey."  Lends a kind of midwestern or even southern feel to things… people greet you here by saying, "hey"!

This morning there was a press conference featuring the Nobel Prize recipients in Physics, Cemistry, and Economics.  It was held in an auditorium at the Royal Academy of Sciences, which is located on the northern edge of the …

Greetings from Stockholm!

Stockholm Street IntersectionShort days here in December… I mean, really short.  I’ll have to remember this when I get back and our winter days in Indiana seem so brief.  In Stockholm at this time of year daylight appears around 9:00 a.m. and it’s dark again by 4:00 in the afternoon.  Combine that with the fact that it was overcast today and you’ll understand why the few photos I took appear so dark, and why I didn’t take more.  The brightest one is …

December 4, 2009

Greetings all,

I’ll be blogging from Stockholm, Sweden, over the coming week while I attend the Nobel Prize ceremonies that take place there from Monday through Thursday.

I hope you’ll find these blog entries interesting and enjoyable.  I’ll try to keep them fairly brief, and to report from Stockholm on this year’s Nobel awards in all disciplines-medicine, chemistry, physics, literature, and economic sciences.  (The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded separately, in Oslo, Norway.)

As you know, Indiana University political scientist Elinor Ostrom is one of this year’s recipients of the Nobel …
