RECENT PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS
ICIC Director Ulla Connor (left, with Jun Liu, Diana Pascoe-Chavez and Kara McBride) was a plenary speaker at the Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Conference on October 21-22 at Saint Louis University. More than 300 people from eight states and nine countries attended the event. Topics for the conference included intercultural communication and rhetoric as well as the relationship between language learning and global citizenship.
ICIC Assistant Director Kathryn Lauten organized a panel discussion on medical discourse for the Pragmatics Festival at Indiana University in Bloomington on April 19-21, 2012. Lauren Harvey and Marta Anton were part of the panel, along with other international researchers and scholars. Culture matters, according to a new book by ICIC Director Ulla Connor. Her latest book, Intercultural Rhetoric in the Writing Classroom, helps trace the evolution in the instruction of writing to second language learners. Full story link
ICIC’s Lauren Harvey presented a session on Intercultural Patient and Healthcare Provider Communication at the Intercultural Management Institute (IMI) 13th Annual Conference on Intercultural Relations at American University on March 15-16, 2011 in Washington, D.C. Harvey also gave a presentation entitled Women’s Leadership Development: Critical Pedagogy in an English Intensive Program at the INTESOL 2011 Conference at IUPUI on November 19. Her talk described ICIC’s annual summer English program for Tsuda College students.
ICIC presented at the International Conference on Communication in Healthcare Conference (ICCH) in Chicago October 16-19, 2011. Conference organizers note this was the largest gathering of researchers, educators and administrators from around the world focusing on improving communication in healthcare.

ICIC has been awarded an IUPUI Signature Center Initiative Grant.
