A number of fellowships, internships, and awards are available to graduate history students at Indianapolis. Applicants interested in any of the following support should indicate so in their personal statement and complete their application before February 1 for full consideration.
DEPARTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Teaching Assistantships
A limited number of teaching assistantships are available to graduate students for work with faculty members in the instruction of survey courses or research work. The 10-month awards currently provide stipends of $9,000 and fee scholarships that cover most of the costs of tuition and fees.
Internships
Several internships are available to students in Public History or U.S. History. Each internship is awarded for a 10-month period and usually provides at least $9,000 stipend and a fee scholarship that covers most of the costs of tuition and fees. Interns have worked for local museums, in collections, exhibits and education overseas, assisted with the development of archives, learned editorial skills, conducted oral history interviews, surveyed historic properties, written National Register nominations, and prepared historic preservation planning reports. Applicants interested in an internship should discuss relevant work experience and career goals in their personal statement. In recent years the department has been able to arrange for a small number of assistantships and internships during the summer months. Consult the Director of Public History regarding possible opportunities.
UNIVERSITY OPPORTUNITIES
Fellowships
First-year graduate history students are eligible to be considered for a limited number of IUPUI University Fellowships. These highly competitive 10-month awards currently provide a stipend of $12,000 and a small travel allowance, as well as the waiver of most fees. Selection of fellows is made only once each year in mid February.
IUPUI Financial Aid
A variety of loan programs and work programs are available to graduate students. Requirements vary greatly, so interested students should contact the IUPUI Office of Student Financial Aid concerning these programs. Financial aid is available for the summer sessions, as well as the fall and spring semesters. The priority deadline for filling out the FAFSA is March 1.
