Sloane Thompson

Walking into Sloane Thompson's office is like walking into your best friend's living room. Warm and inviting, she always greets visitors with a smile and can't wait to get to know the students and alumni who come to her door.

Thompson is the Director of Career Development in the School of Liberal Arts where she helps students with majors, internship options, and graduate school applications. She is always enthusiastic about helping students find their way, saying, "I have the best job in the world."

Working with student advising at IUPUI for six years has made Thompson well known for her warm personality and professional advice. The School of Liberal Arts Student Council recognized her at the 2008 Celebration of Scholarship for her selection as Outstanding Staff Member. She was nominated for the Student Supervisor of the year award last spring by Rashid Owoyele and Lindsay Smith, student staff members in the Career Development Office. She routinely hires undergrads and grad students as communications and marketing interns and says, "I know that I could not do the wonderful work we are doing without the assistance of my very talented and helpful student staff."

Thompson came to IUPUI in 2003 with experience from other campuses such as Wesleyan University and Indiana University in Bloomington. She enjoys IUPUI's young urban campus and its lack of fear to try new things. She also admires the bright, mature, caring, and unique character of Liberal Arts students. Being able to continually learn new things is one of Thompson's favorite aspects of her job. "I've never been bored," she says. She is constantly on the watch for new opportunities for her students whether it be programs at IUPUI or career opportunities out in the city after graduation.

Tarah Calvert came to Thompson in 2005 as a student wanting to create an individualized major. She graduated in 2008 with a degree in Legal Communication and a Certification in Paralegal Studies. She says, "I credit Ms. Thompson with making sure I fulfilled every goal that I had for my undergraduate experience."

Not only was Calvert able to create her own major, she studied law abroad at the University of Derby with the encouragement of Thompson. The mentoring process did not stop after graduation. Calvert says, "Even now, as a graduate, she has supplied me with critical information to help ease the transition from college life to the professional world." Calvert now works as a Compliance Analyst with Allied Solutions LLC in Carmel, Indiana, a position Thompson helped to find.

Thompson is always glad to chat about classes and help with questions about professional job searches or graduate school. Just be prepared for a warm and helpful conversation when you step into Cavanaugh Hall 243.
