John McCormick
Educated in South Africa, London, and Indiana, Dr. John McCormick brings a diverse and well-rounded approach to his classroom. As a Professor of Political Science and Chair of the department since 2002, McCormick is heavily invested in European Politics due in large part to his British citizenry and upbringing in Kenya, formerly a British colony.
With the world's largest economy residing in Europe, McCormick finds necessity in bringing the importance of the European Union to the forefront of his classrooms to make students more aware citizens. His goal is to show students that "literally every moment of our lives is impacted by politics." According to McCormick, the benefit of focusing on European politics is in the comparative nature of research. In order to understand the world in which we live, we must understand the economic, political, and social impact of the European Union on the United States as a whole, and Indiana specifically.
McCormick takes a less-traveled path in teaching. After realizing his students were more interested in the politics than the textbooks, he seized the opportunity to write interesting texts to engage students in class and beyond. By authoring the texts that he uses in the classroom, McCormick is able to show students why it all matters.
Every April, McCormick organizes an intercollegiate mock-European Union at IUPUI. With ten schools from different states and more than 150 students, the conference allows students to apply what they learn in the classroom within a political arena. The simulation is highly regarded among the community of Political Science Studies creating a "positive impact that helps keep Europeanist faculty connected and students engaged with global issues."
In and outside the classroom, Professor McCormick provides tools for students from IUPUI and elsewhere to experience their world with a global perspective
