The joy of learning is as indispensable in study as breathing is in running. Where it is lacking there are no real students, but only poor caricatures of apprentices who, at the end of their apprenticeship, will not even have a trade. ~ Simone Weil

English Department Internships

The college degree you are working toward is a solid investment in your future. However, as you know, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for graduates to find the jobs they want. That’s why the Department of English encourages you to make yet another investment in your future: an internship. An English department internship is a unique, yet readily available, opportunity for you to take your learning beyond the classroom and into the workplace.

What is an internship?

An internship is an on-the-job learning opportunity designed to supplement your classroom work with practical, hands-on experience. IUPUI’s English department offers internships under the course number ENG E398: Internship in English, for 1-6 credit hours. Each credit hour requires 50 hours in a workplace; these hours may be completed over a time period less or more than a semester, or they may span two semesters.

The Department of English also offers W496, an undergraduate tutoring internship in the University Writing Center (for more information about this opportunity, contact Writing Center Coordinator Tere Molinder Hogue, CA 429, 274-5650, tmhogue@iupui.edu).

Why should I do an internship?

An English department internship is designed specifically to help you work with, and improve your knowledge of, the English language and the ways it can be applied. From this experience you will find not only a better understanding of the language itself, but an opportunity to:

How do I find an internship?

Internship position listings can be found:

In addition to pursuing internships at organizations that have posted job listings, students are encouraged to network and seek their own internship opportunities at businesses and nonprofit organizations as well as on-campus organizations.

The Career Development Center in CA 243 has handouts with tips for writing cover letters and resumes, and staff members are happy to help you with your application materials.  Stop by CA 243 during walk-in hours, Mondays through Thursdays from 1:30 - 4:30, or e-mail libacdo@iupui.edu to request an appointment with a career coach.  University Writing Center tutors can also be of help with resumes and cover letters.  Call 274-2049 or 278-8171, or stop by CA 427 or UL 2125 to make an appointment.

How do I receive internship credit?

Those who apply for internship credits will receive a letter grade for the internship course and grades will be assessed as follows:

*See the internship course syllabus on the internship course’s Oncourse site for assignment guidelines and due dates.

How much does an internship pay?

While some businesses and organizations may not offer pay, students are eligible to receive pay and/or tuition reimbursements in addition to college credit. If you obtain an internship with a campus, government, or non-profit organization, you may wish to encourage your manager to see if the organization is able to offer work-study pay or to apply for IUPUI Community Venture matching funding to support a salary for you in advance of your start date.

Nonprofit or government agencies approved by the Office of Community Work-study may offer work-study pay to Federal Work-study eligible students.  For more information on which organizations are approved, or on how an organization may be approved, contact Morgan Studer at the Center for Service Learning, mohughes@iupui.edu, 278-3474.

Nonprofits and government organizations, including campus organizations, may also apply to the IUPUI Community Venture Fund (contact Sarah Zike, Assistant Director of the Solution Center for information szikefau@iupui.edu, 274-0559).

Application Deadlines

Internship application forms and employer agreements are due to the internship coordinator before the end of the first week of classes in a given semester. The student should also contact the internship coordinator to schedule the preliminary meeting during the first week of classes.

However, students who are hired for internship positions after the first week in a semester may still be eligible to apply for credit. Please contact the internship coordinator.
