The college degree you are working toward is a solid investment in your future. However, as you know, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for graduates to find the jobs they want. That’s why the Department of English encourages you to make yet another investment in your future: an internship. An English department internship is a unique, yet readily available, opportunity for you to take your learning beyond the classroom and into the workplace.
An internship is an on-the-job learning opportunity designed to supplement your classroom work with practical, hands-on experience. IUPUI’s English department offers internships under the course number ENG E398: Internship in English, for 1-6 credit hours. Each credit hour requires 50 hours in a workplace; these hours may be completed over a time period less or more than a semester, or they may span two semesters.
The Department of English also offers W496, an undergraduate tutoring internship in the University Writing Center (for more information about this opportunity, contact Writing Center Coordinator Tere Molinder Hogue, CA 429, 274-5650, tmhogue@iupui.edu).
An English department internship is designed specifically to help you work with, and improve your knowledge of, the English language and the ways it can be applied. From this experience you will find not only a better understanding of the language itself, but an opportunity to:
learn beyond the classroom environment
explore various career opportunities before committing to them
gain experience in career-related fields
prove your ability to perform at the professional level
make valuable contacts in the professional world
find permanent employment, perhaps with the organization in which you intern
To be eligible to apply for internship credits, students must:
be pursuing a degree in English
have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
have completed at least 60 credit hours of college courses
secure an internship position with a campus or local business organization
work a required number of hours based on the number of credits to be earned:
50 hours for a 1-credit internship (generally about 3 hours per week for 15 weeks, W398)
150 hours for a 3-credit internship (generally 10 hours per week for 15 weeks, E398)
fill out an internship application form and have the employer complete an employer agreement
submit the internship application and employer agreement to the internship coordinator for approval
register for the course after receiving approval from the English Department’s internship coordinator
pay for the course and complete the internship in the semester for which it has been approved
keep in mind that only six internship credits will count toward the degree
Internship position listings can be found:
in e-mail messages from the English Major and School of Liberal Arts Career Development listservs
on the English Department website
on the Liberal Arts job board, coming soon
through JagJobs.org, www.indianaintern.net, internqueen.com, and University College Career Planning
In addition to pursuing internships at organizations that have posted job listings, students are encouraged to network and seek their own internship opportunities at businesses and nonprofit organizations as well as on-campus organizations.

While some businesses and organizations may not offer pay, students are eligible to receive pay and/or tuition reimbursements in addition to college credit. If you obtain an internship with a campus, government, or non-profit organization, you may wish to encourage your manager to see if the organization is able to offer work-study pay or to apply for IUPUI Community Venture matching funding to support a salary for you in advance of your start date.
Nonprofit or government agencies approved by the Office of Community Work-study may offer work-study pay to Federal Work-study eligible students. For more information on which organizations are approved, or on how an organization may be approved, contact Morgan Studer at the Center for Service Learning, mohughes@iupui.edu, 278-3474.
Nonprofits and government organizations, including campus organizations, may also apply to the IUPUI Community Venture Fund (contact Sarah Zike, Assistant Director of the Solution Center for information szikefau@iupui.edu, 274-0559).
Internship application forms and employer agreements are due to the internship coordinator before the end of the first week of classes in a given semester. The student should also contact the internship coordinator to schedule the preliminary meeting during the first week of classes.
However, students who are hired for internship positions after the first week in a semester may still be eligible to apply for credit. Please contact the internship coordinator.
