Hoosier Writing Project and Indiana Teachers of Writing
The Hoosier Writing Project (HWP) was founded in 1993. It is a site of the National Writing Project (NWP), the nation’s premier professional development organization in the area of writing and reading; NWP receives annual bipartisan Congressional support for its network of 200 sites. HWP is sponsored by the Indiana Teachers of Writing (ITW), a statewide organization founded in the 1980s to support teachers of writing at all levels; the annual ITW fall conference is a major event for these teachers. ITW also sponsors the Journal of Teaching Writing, the only peer-edited journal on teaching writing at all levels, K-college.
The Hoosier Writing Project, directed by Prof. Steve Fox, English Department, IUPUI, holds annual summer institutes and conducts professional development workshops and study groups throughout the central Indiana area and in the South Bend area. The summer institutes are invitational; teachers at any level, K-college, who consider teaching writing one of their responsibilities, are encouraged to apply each January for the June institute. Schools and school districts that would like to discuss professional development in the areas of teaching writing or reading should contact Prof. Fox, sfox@iupui.edu. Consult the Hoosier Writing Project Website for further information, news, and a calendar.
