A Message from the Dean . . .

Welcome to the IU School of Liberal Arts, the home of the humanities and the social sciences at IUPUI. In 2004-05, staff, faculty and students undertook a complete review of the School’s mission and developed a new articulation of our vision for the future, of our shared values and of a set of comprehensive goals. This collaborative planning process ensured the inclusion of a diverse array of priorities meant to strengthen the school and foster a learning and research environment attuned to the needs of students, faculty, staff, and the community. The strategic plan will guide us throughout the coming years as we work together to achieve our objectives.

We live in a highly complex world in which new technologies have rapidly brought us into contact with widely different cultures. If Indiana’s (and Indianapolis’) economy is to grow, its citizens must be prepared to understand and work with people from all parts of the world. Through the study of human cultures, of differing economic structures, geo-political systems, history, and sociological structures, our students are uniquely equipped to function in a changing world. They gain important insights into the human condition through literature, religion, language and cultural studies, and as people skilled in thinking critically and communicating effectively. They are well positioned to serve our state’s needs in all areas: the life sciences, advanced manufacturing, computing environments, non-profit management, and arts and culture. Indeed, the interdisciplinary nature of the Liberal Arts contributes substantially to graduates’ ability to work in virtually any realm.

I invite you to explore the School of Liberal Arts. The 2006-2010 Strategic Plan sets a new course for the future. Please join us on this important journey.

Sincerely,
Robert W. WhiteD
