Naming Opportunities
Endowments
Deanship
The Dean of the School of Liberal Arts is the
academic and administrative leader of the broad community
of learning that is represented in the eleven departments
and multiple centers, programs and institutes representing
the humanities and social sciences. The interdisciplinary
nature of the liberal arts crosses traditional school boundaries,
resulting in rich collaborations in the health sciences,
law, and the arts. An endowment naming this position would
provide the resources for this leadership position to advance
the development of new academic collaborations, support
research, undergraduate and graduate programs, develop student
focused initiatives, community outreach opportunities and
more. To name the Deanship of the IU School of Liberal Arts
at IUPUI, a gift of no less than $3 million is required.
Directorship
Centers, Programs and Institutes are lead and
administered by Directors who are themselves noted scholars
in their fields. Their administrative responsibilities support
the research mission of the particular center, program or
institute, and include both financial and personnel resource
development. To name a Directorship a gift of not less than
$2 million is required.
Virtual Chair
New technologies applied to undergraduate and
graduate teaching and research require expertise beyond
a particular disciplinary interest. A "Virtual Chair"
might be held by someone whose is skilled in developing
and using the new technologies in both research and teaching.
A gift of at least $1.5 million would be required to support
this type of position.
Chair in an Academic Department
Endowing a named chair in an academic department
enables the donor to support study and scholarship in the
Liberal Arts. Specifically, a donor may select that area
that they believe to be most critical to a successful study
of the Liberal Arts. Named chairs attract strong faculty
members and students and enhance the reputation of the department
and school as well as the university. Endowment funds may
be used to support scholarly research, provide for research
assistance, build academic programs, and to develop other
projects deemed to support the work of the department. A
Named Chair in an Academic Department requires a gift of
$1 million.
Chair in a Specific Program Area
Donors may choose to support specific areas of
scholarly exploration such as Medical Humanities, Jewish
Studies, Gender Studies and Civil War History. A gift of
$1 million, allows a donor to make a difference in teaching
and research by creating a prestigious permanent position
in a particular area. The endowed position not only will
attract high caliber faculty, but it will also improve the
quality and prestige of the program itself. The endowment
income may support students, provide necessary technology,
fund seminars and workshops and generally enhance teaching
and research.
Professorship
Named professorships recognize distinguished
scholars and provide for additional resources to reward
scholarship, teaching and service. A gift of $500,000 can
support salary enhancements and provide for library resources,
travel needs or other opportunities for the professor to
advance knowledge and change lives.
Internship
Endowed internships create important opportunities
to gain the practical experience necessary to accompany
academic knowledge. Named internships supported by endowments
the student to devote his or her efforts where they are
most needed, while at the same time following his or her
academic interests. An internship may be named and endowed
with a gift of $225,000.
Lecture Series
It is one responsibility of the university to
provide opportunities that bring together students and faculty,
alumni and staff, friends and community members for the
purpose of intellectual exploration. A named lectureship
in the School of Liberal Arts provides these opportunities
on a regular basis. A gift of $50,000 is required to support
a named lectureship and enables the School to recruit important
speakers, market the lecture to the correct audience, and
pay for the other expenses associated with a successful
series.
Scholarship
Endowing a scholarship enables the donor to make
a lasting impact on the lives of students and the productive
members of society that they become. Scholarships enable
students to attend college without shouldering a heavy debt
when they graduate. Students can study more and work less,
therefore, devoting more energy and effort to learning.
Scholarships can come in every shape and size and allow
the donor to focus their gift narrowly on students studying
in a specific area or can be more broadly defined within
the School. Named scholarships begin at $10,000 (provides
one, $500 per year) but have no limit (a $1 million gift
for scholarships can support up to 12, 4-year full tuition
scholarships at a time).
Lectureship
A named lectureship provides an opportunity to
recognize and support the outstanding contribution made
by lecturers. Typically, lecturers teach many of the introductory
courses (such as composition and public speaking) in the
school's larger departments are non-tenure track instructors
who do not enjoy the same benefits as tenure track professors.
Donors may support and recognize the teaching and service
of this important group with an endowed lectureship for
$200,000.
Name a Laboratory
Technology is a critical tool in the study of
the Liberal Arts. Faculty use technology in their teaching,
writing and research, and students use technology to practice
language and public speaking, to write, to research, and
to learn the skills necessary to enter to enter the workforce.
In Liberal Arts, technology labs are at the center of many
of the programs. The School houses the only video production
facility on the IUPUI campus, is home to the American Sign
Language/English Interpreting degree program and its state-of-the-art
facilities, the Social Sciences lab supports both the complicated
work of the Economics Department and the Geography Department's
Geographic Information Science program. Finally, the Multimedia
Language Resource Center is a critical center for the study
of foreign languages. These technology centers provide an
opportunity to endow facilities that are absolutely essential
to each student's education. Each laboratory may be named
with a gift of $1 million. Computer workstations may be
named with a gift of $1,500.

Name an Endowed Research Center
A strong endowment is critical to the longevity
and success of a research center. Without an endowment,
research centers must focus on raising funds needed to
sustain the center each year. A named center would be
able to focus less on fundraising and focus more on the
important scholarly work at hand. Endowment interest would
be used to support the center's efforts to explore important
aspects of our world, serve as a resource for other scholars
and students, publish books, articles, etc., maintain
its facilities and human resources, and much, much more.
The work of the centers housed in the School of Liberal
Arts has already received local and national attention,
but there is always more work to be done. A named research
center typically requires a gift of $3 million and is
an important way for a dedicated donor to support scholarly
work in perpetuity.

Name an Endowed Program
Programs in the Liberal Arts are faculty units
which round out the School's curriculum by providing courses
in areas not offered by departments. Programs offer students
either minors or certificates and allow students opportunity
to explore various aspects of the liberal arts. A donor
with a special commitment to the study of an area such
as Women's Studies or Museum Studies may name a Liberal
Arts program with a gift of $500,000. An endowment would
allow a program to expand its offerings, host special
programs, recruit students, support faculty research and
travel and generally encourage the growth of the program.
