There are currently two options offered by the Africana Studies Program for studying abroad:
Moi University is one of the leading universities in Kenya, indeed in all of East Africa. It is an important partner, and there is much that we can accomplish by working together. There is great opportunity for meaningful engagement for faculty, staff, and students from both institutions in a whole host of arenas, including faculty and curriculum development, institution building, student and faculty exchange, collaborative research projects, distance education, study abroad programming, and expanding the impact and outreach of the extraordinary work being done with respect to HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. The Hermano a Hermano Project is a service-learning program that takes IUPUI and IU students to the Dominican Republic for ten days. During the course of the ten days, students learn about Dominican culture and history. Students also cover topics such as Afro-Dominican, Dominican-Haitian conflict and contemporary Afro-Caribbean life within the Dominican Republic. The program is designed to engage more Black American students in international programs and international service-learning.
As part of the program student participants undertake service-learning projects in three different Dominican communities. One is in a rural community helping Dominican schools and beautification projects, building libraries, painting, updating classrooms. A second community service project is performed in what are called Haitian bates with Haitian refugees who are living in the Dominican Republic. For more information contact junroger@iupui.edu.
